This note is aimed at novice Role players so if you have experience, do not be surprised if some of this sounds familiar to you. There are many different types of games out there to be played, board games, card games, picture games, video games and many others. Among the vast amount of games out there Role playing games remain utterly unique. Role playing is really about stretching your imagination. To give you an idea what a guided adventure is like let us imagine for a moment you are playing a board game. A game who objective is to make it from one end of the board to another before anyone else. I am sure you assume in this scenario there will be obstacles and traps that will cause you to slow down or fall back toward the starting point, and things that will allow you to move forward faster toward the end goal. So far fairly simple to understand, right? Now, let us try to imagine if instead of traps and leaps we used hidden door and secret passages. Imagine we don’t roll a die to see how far we move because you can have your character move as far in any available direction you want. Move down that corridor, find an intersection, make the choice to turn left or right or go back or straight ahead further. Perhaps stop to examine the walls for hidden doors. If found this hidden door may open up a whole new avenue of exploration for you. Only way to know will be to step in and look around and explore. Now we can also go ahead and put some other things in this corridor with you, maybe some dangerous things like vampires, goblins, ogres, who knows, but fact is, you will be able to defend yourself so don’t get overly worried. Of course there will be other players with you, at most times at least, they will be armed most likely and also able to defend themselves and their companions. How would another player react anyhow if there was a chance meet? Surely they may attack you, but also they might offer to join you, who knows. And to really wrap your mind around how this works let us finally take the board and put it somewhere where the players can not see it. Let us give it to one of our lore bringers and make that person the referee, so to speak. Instead of staring at a playing board you will listen to this referee as they describe to you all what you can see from your positions on that board. You tell this referee what choices you are making and which ways you would like to make your character move or actions you would like to perform and they will move your piece accordingly. The lore bringer will describe things to you in great detail, here is where your imagination will truly be tested. Here in Kallidyr we will strive to provide as much visual content as we can for you in 3d but you can still expect much to be narrated to you to make the experience complete. You must be able to close your eyes and try to construct what the lore bringer is describing to you. Become part of the scenes and descriptions and make choices and relay them to the lore bringer so they can move the game along in the so many different possible ways things can go based on those decisions. These are the basic concepts that make up an organized Role playing game. Lastly I would like to discuss the ultimate goal of Role playing games. This is another huge difference between Role playing and other types of games. Everyone expects there to be a winner and a loser. Well here there are none. No one can win or lose. The entire point here is to socialize and have fun. Usually any given adventure will have goals to be met and may take two or three sessions to complete, but never is the end of an adventure or story the end of the game. Kallidyr is a world and the world stops moving for no one. The non playing characters that live here along with your characters will make sure of that as they go about their everyday lives. So now that you have a good understanding of what organized Role play is all about please feel free to move on to the character creation section, and remember, HAVE FUN!
